What Are SASSA Grants?
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is the government body that pays out social grants to millions of South Africans every month. If you are elderly, disabled, a caregiver, or have no income right now, there is likely a SASSA grant you can apply for — and it will never cost you a cent.
In the 2026/2027 financial year, SASSA is distributing R292.8 billion to support over 26.5 million South African beneficiaries across all 9 provinces.

All 8 SASSA Grant Types Explained
👶 Children's Grants
Child Support Grant
Paid monthly to the primary caregiver of a child under 18. This is the most widely received SASSA grant in South Africa — designed to help with food, clothing, and daily essentials for children in lower-income homes.
Foster Child Grant
Paid to foster parents who have a child placed in their home through a formal court order. It is higher than the Child Support Grant because foster parents take on full legal responsibility for the child's care and upbringing.

Care Dependency Grant
Paid to parents or full-time caregivers of a child with a severe disability that requires permanent, round-the-clock care at home. A medical assessment from a SASSA-approved doctor is needed to qualify.
Disability Grant
For South Africans aged 18–59 who have a physical or mental disability that makes it impossible to work for more than six months. You will need a recent medical report — the assessment is done at a SASSA office and is completely free.
👴 Elderly & Support Grants
Older Person's Grant
South Africa's state pension — paid monthly to citizens aged 60 and older who pass the income and asset means test. The amount increases at age 75. Many South Africans rely on this as their primary source of income in retirement.
Grant-in-Aid
A monthly top-up for people already receiving an Older Person's Grant, Disability Grant, or War Veterans Grant — who also need another person to care for them full time. It is not a standalone grant; it is added on top of your existing payment.
War Veterans Grant
Paid to South African veterans of World War II or the Korean War who are aged 60 or older, or who have a disability. The grant is slightly higher than the standard Older Person's Grant in recognition of their service.
SRD R370 Grant — Social Relief of Distress
The SRD grant is for unemployed South Africans aged 18–59 who have no income at all. Unlike all other grants, you apply entirely online — no queuing at a SASSA office. Your eligibility is re-checked every month, so approval one month does not guarantee the next. The grant is confirmed until March 2027, with a permanent Livelihoods Support Grant being planned as its replacement.

Before approving any grant, SASSA checks your income, assets, and personal details against government databases. Here is what applies across most grants:
Income Threshold (Means Test)
Your monthly income must fall below SASSA's limit for the grant you are applying for. The SRD threshold is R628/month. Traditional grants have higher, grant-specific income limits.
Asset Limit
The total value of your assets — savings, investments, and property — must not exceed the prescribed threshold. Your primary home is excluded from this calculation in most cases.
Citizenship & Residency
You must be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or officially recognised refugee currently living in South Africa. SASSA verifies this directly with the Department of Home Affairs.
No Double-Dipping Rule
You cannot receive two SASSA grants for yourself at the same time — except the Grant-in-Aid top-up. You also cannot receive UIF or NSFAS funding while on a SASSA grant.
Documents You Need to Apply
Missing documents is the number one reason applications are delayed at SASSA offices. All copies must be certified by SAPS or a Commissioner of Oaths — certifications older than 3 months are not accepted.

How to Apply for a SASSA Grant in 2026
There are two application routes depending on which grant you need. The SRD R370 is fully online. All other grants require an in-person visit to your nearest SASSA office.
💳 Online Route — SRD R370 Grant Only
- Go to srd.sassa.gov.za on your phone or computer — it is completely free.
- Enter your 13-digit ID number and the active cellphone number registered to your ID.
- Enter the one-time PIN (OTP) sent to your phone via SMS to confirm your identity.
- Agree to SASSA's request to verify your details with SARS and Home Affairs.
- Enter your bank account details carefully — it must be an account in your own name only.
- Submit and wait for an SMS. SASSA will notify you of the outcome within 10–15 working days.
🏢 In-Person Route — All Other Grants
- Gather and certify all documents from the checklist above that apply to your grant type.

- Always ask for a stamped receipt with a reference number before you leave — keep it safe.
What Happens After You Apply?
Verification (1–15 working days)
SASSA cross-checks your ID with Home Affairs, then queries SARS, UIF, NSFAS and banking records to confirm you have no undisclosed income. This is why your status shows Pending for a few days — it is normal and expected.
Approval Timelines
Traditional grants like the Older Person's or Disability Grant can take up to 3 months to fully process. The SRD R370 is re-assessed every month — faster but not guaranteed month to month.
Backpay / Arrears
If your traditional grant takes 3 months to approve, you will receive back-pay covering all months you waited. Your start date is calculated from the day you submitted — not the day it was approved.
How to Collect Your SASSA Grant Payment
Direct Bank Deposit
The safest option. Your grant goes directly into your personal account at Capitec, Standard Bank, FNB, ABSA, Nedbank, or any other recognised South African bank. No queuing, no travel required.
Retail Stores
Collect your grant at the till point at Shoprite, Checkers, Pick n Pay, Boxer, or USave. At some stores you do not even need a card — just your ID and PIN.
CashSend / eWallet
No bank account? SRD payments can be sent directly to your cellphone number, allowing cardless cash withdrawals at participating ATMs across South Africa.
What Does Your SASSA Status Mean?
