Older Persons Grant — Quick Facts 2026
What Is the Older Persons Grant?
The Older Persons Grant — commonly known as the old age pension — is a monthly social grant paid by SASSA to South African citizens and permanent residents aged 60 and older who meet the income and asset requirements. It is the most widely claimed adult grant in the country, supporting approximately 4 million elderly South Africans every month.
The grant pays R2,400 per month for recipients aged 60 to 74, and R2,420 per month for those aged 75 and older. Both amounts were increased from R2,315 and R2,335 respectively, effective 1 April 2026, as part of the 2026/27 National Budget increases approved by National Treasury.
Unlike most other grants, the Older Persons Grant uses a sliding scale — if you have some private income, SASSA reduces your grant proportionally rather than disqualifying you entirely. This means you may still receive a partial grant even if your income is not zero.

Documents Required to Apply
You must bring original documents — photocopies are not accepted. Have all of these ready before your SASSA appointment:
How to Apply for the Older Persons Grant — Step by Step
Applications must be done in person at a SASSA office or service point. The application is completely free — never pay anyone to apply on your behalf.
- Gather all required documents Collect all original documents listed above before visiting SASSA. Incomplete applications cause delays — missing even one document may mean a second trip.
- You can prepare before your 60th birthday You may visit your SASSA office shortly before you turn 60 to prepare your documents. Your application can only be formally submitted on or after the date you turn 60 — but arriving prepared means faster approval.
- Visit your nearest SASSA office Go to your nearest SASSA office or SASSA service point at a post office or community centre. Offices are open Monday to Friday, 07:30 to 16:00. Arrive early as queues can be long.
- Complete the application form A SASSA officer will assist you to complete the application form. The officer fills in the form in your presence and explains each section. You do not need to pre-fill the form.
- Submit your documents and keep your receipt Hand over all your original documents. SASSA will make copies and return the originals. You will receive a receipt — keep this as proof of your application date. Your receipt has a reference number for follow-up queries.
- Biometric verification SASSA will capture your fingerprints and photograph for identity verification. This is mandatory for all new applications in 2026. If you are unable to provide fingerprints due to a disability or medical condition, inform the SASSA officer who will arrange an alternative verification method.
- Await approval (up to 90 days) Processing can take up to 90 days. Once approved, payments are backdated to your application date — you will not lose money during the waiting period. Check your status by calling 0800 60 10 11 or visiting your nearest office.
- Submit your annual life certificate Once approved, if you receive payment through a bank or institution, you must submit a life certificate at a SASSA office every year to confirm you are still alive and eligible. SASSA will notify you when it is due — failure to submit results in grant suspension.

Frequently Asked Questions — Older Persons Grant 2026
How much is the Older Persons Grant in 2026?
The Older Persons Grant pays R2,400 per month for recipients aged 60 to 74, and R2,420 per month for those aged 75 and older. Both amounts were increased from April 2026 as part of the 2026/27 National Budget. The previous amounts were R2,315 (ages 60–74) and R2,335 (ages 75+).
Can I still work and receive the Older Persons Grant?
Yes. There is no rule against working while receiving the grant. As long as your total income — including your salary — stays within the means test threshold of R8,983 per month (single) or R17,966 combined (married), you can continue receiving the grant. The sliding scale will adjust your payment based on your declared income.
Can I receive the Older Persons Grant and a private pension at the same time?
You cannot receive two SASSA personal grants at the same time. However, a private pension from a previous employer or provident fund counts as income toward your means test. You may still qualify for the Older Persons Grant if your total income — including the private pension — remains below the threshold.
How long does it take for the Older Persons Grant to be approved?
Processing takes up to 90 days from the date of application. Once approved, payments are backdated to your application date, so you will receive back-pay for the entire waiting period. Keep your application receipt as proof of your application date.
What is a life certificate and when do I need to submit one?
A life certificate is a document you submit annually to confirm you are still alive and eligible to receive your grant. It is required if you receive payment through a bank or institution. SASSA will notify you when your certificate is due. Failure to submit it results in your grant being suspended until you do so at a SASSA office.
What happens if my Older Persons Grant is suspended?
Grants are commonly suspended due to a missed life certificate, an unreported change in circumstances, or a routine compliance review. Visit your nearest SASSA office immediately with your ID and any requested documents. Once verified, your grant will be restored with back-pay for the suspension period.
Can I apply before I turn 60?
You can visit your SASSA office before your 60th birthday to prepare documents and get assistance. However, your application can only be formally submitted on or after the date you turn 60. Arriving prepared means you can submit on your 60th birthday and begin receiving your grant sooner.
